Minister Peets at the Legends Scholarship Presentation

July 6, 2023

The 2021 BFA legends Scholarship presentation was held on Thursday, August 5th 2021, at the Clyde Best Centre of Excellence. Five young athletes received scholarship of the five honored BFA Legends for 2021. Minister Dr. Ernest Peets Jr. addressed the Legends and recipients at the presentation.

Minister Peets' address is as follows:

"On behalf of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport, I'm pleased to be here to recognise the recipients of the Bermuda Football Association's Legends Scholarship Awards.

It's fitting that we're having this presentation event at the BFA's “Clyde Best Center of Excellence” - as it's such a tribute to the talent and the legacy of one of our greatest sports heroes.

And we've certainly seen much success and sports excellence in recent days - with Flora Duffy making history, winning a Gold Medal, a first for Bermuda. And of course, Somerset winning the annual Cup Match Cricket classic in very convincing fashion.

So without question, this Government and my Ministry are deeply committed to sport in the country.

Sport is considered one of the bedrocks of our community and we fully recognize and embrace the critical role that sport plays in the social, physical, mental and emotional wellbeing in Bermuda.

Likewise, we understand that the challenges imposed by COVID-19 have been a blow to the sporting community and we appreciate everyone’s patience and collaboration as Bermuda continues to battle through this pandemic to keep our people safe.

So this evening in my view is more than just a scholarship presentation.

It's a testament that with collaboration, partnership, perseverance and resilience, we can work towards a common goal of supporting those in our sports community even when we are faced with adversity.

This evening we are here to salute the BFA Legend Scholarship recipients.

This awards initiative is steeped in tradition.

Originally started in 2007, over the years some $600,000 has been awarded to date to worthy members of our sports community - all who have gone on to accomplish amazing things on behalf of Bermuda.

Over the years some notable winners have been Dante’ Leverock - professional footballer, former Bermuda Captain and Master’Ws Degree Candidate.

And Zeiko Lewis - professional footballer and Boston College Graduate.

Some of our notable Legends include of course, Clyde Best, one of the pioneer black players in the UK, and Randolph Horton Former MP and Speaker of the House.

So this year's awardees are in very distinguished company.

Before I close, I wish to give a special acknowledgement to Mrs. Dianne Hunt, who was a legend in 2007 and who still serves football as part of the selection committee.

Thank you Mrs. Hunt for your dedication and service to sports in Bermuda. You truly are a legend in your own right.

Lastly, again, the fact that we're able to safely come together against the backdrop of what we're navigating through as a country is again a testament of our grit and determination.

Sporting events and sports success bring us together in a spirit of comradery, and they engender national pride to keep us united as one people. We saw this recently with Flora and Cup Match.

And I am so grateful that I was able to join you today to reinforce our commitment to working with you and all our governing sports bodies in developing our next generation of sports stars.

Please continue to keep yourselves, your families and our community safe.

Congratulations once again to the 2021 BFA Legends Scholarship recipients.

Thank you."
