Bermuda Football Association, Technical Director, Derek Broadley, has wasted little time with his new post. After being on the island for a mere (3) weeks, Broadley has outlined plans for the BFA in the technical areas that will take the program forward.
I am Derek Broadley the new Technical Director of the Bermuda Football Association,
The following will give a brief insight into my ideas for taking the technical areas of the BFA forward over the coming years.
Coaching education
Our coaching courses will focus on:
Skill acquisition, encouraging youngsters to stay on the ball, and to develop their individualism first, before working on the end product of passing, crossing and shooting. Leading onto game style strategies and tactical decision making with an aim of winning football matches consistently!
The BFA acknowledges the reasons why players want to play this great game, and it is our belief that the best way to pick up the signals of the game is “Play” Therefore practices will resemble the real game.
I firmly believe:
“The worlds best players can play in tight situations: they are the ones who make the best decisions more often and on a consistent basis”.
Our Coaching Education aims are to produce great coaches who in turn will produce great players. This will be developed over the next three years with work on developing our own BFA coach education courses. In the meantime we have developed links with the NSCAA in the US and the English FA to use their current coaching education schemes to support our coaches.
The aim of the coaching education schemes will be to develop coaches who demonstrate:
1. Honesty
2. Self confidence
3. Knowledge of different learning styles
4. Communication skills
5. A willingness to share their knowledge
6. A good work ethic
7. Leadership and mentoring skills
8. A commitment to supporting their community
9. A detailed knowledge of the game
10. A willingness to learn
We are committed to educating, mentoring and assisting coaches to develop they’re coaching skills so that they in turn are achieving the highest possible benchmark of success at whatever level they are working.
Our philosophy on player development:
The new methodology for coaching within the BFA will follow the natural process of learning for young players: it will introduce topics of football when they are appropriate to the development process. The main theme that will flow through all stages of our development system is the ability to “stay with the ball”.
Our coaches will encourage “risk taking” along with “trying difficult technical skills” throughout the practices, with support for a “when and where” mentality. This will then enable our player’s to work on team related themes that support out game style that will be evident throughout the National team program.
I am really looking forward to working with all of the football people on the island with a view to reviving the glory days of the past.
