Changes at the Den
Minister Elvin James, JP MP, and Director of Department of Youth and Sports, Norbert Simons, and including staff members continued Government’s visits to sports clubs to see first-hand the improvements made to the clubs infrastructure as a result of Government’s financial commitment to upgrading club facilities.
The venue on this occasion is the Devonshire Recreation Club, (DRC) with Club President Mr. Kent Henry, who was more than proud to show Minister James, that Government’s funds have not been squandered. Upon entering the Den it is obvious that safety and security have been a priority for the Devonshire club.
President Henry proudly showed off the 4 foot high fencing that lines the invitingly dangerous bank whose only previous safety barrier was a deteriorated wooden fence. Additionally, President Henry pointed out that security cameras have been installed strategically around the clubhouse to keep a sharp eye on those persons who visit the premise. These two measures alone will prove to be of great value during the upcoming football season.
Notwithstanding the above, President Henry appeared to be most proud of the renovations that have taken place with the clubs changing rooms. Draped in the clubs well recognized green and gold colors, the changing rooms have seen a huge transformation from years gone-by. In addition to the innovative paint job, new tile, finished vanities, new fixtures, fitting that included upgrading showers and toilet stalls; this will be a welcome addition for players and officials. This has been in the works for some time and now the new transformation to the work that has already been accomplished on the outside adds a new dimension to (DRC).
President Henry made it quite clear that the mission to renovate and upgrade the club is ongoing with plans to address the driveway and run-off from rain water plus the installation of fencing in front of the south concrete stands. He added that Devonshire Recreation Club will always be an important part of the social and sporting life in Bermuda and it is therefore necessary to continue the efforts of improving the club’s facilities. He went on to state, he and the family of (DRC) are very pleased with Government’s commitment to improve the facilities at all clubs throughout the Island and he is grateful for the financial support given specifically to the Devonshire Recreation Club.
