Somerset Cricket Club continues to look for improvements

SOMERSET CRICKET CLUB – Visit by Senator Mark Bean

On Thursday, August 14th, Senator Mark Bean, Junior Minister for the Ministry of Environment and Sports, continued the Ministry’s tour of club grounds to be briefed on just how their allocation of the Bermuda Government’s $1 million dollar grant to improve the facilities and infrastructures at various sporting and other community clubs throughout the Island had been utilized.

President of the Somerset Cricket Club (SCC) Mr. Richard Scott, said that the club aims to embark upon an ambitious renovation program covering all three levels of the clubhouse. The first priority is to upgrade the changing rooms on the lower level. He stated that our teams including visiting teams deserve to be treated at the highest level and it is his goal to see the club standards raise to International standards. While stressing the importance of upgrading the Club House amenities, he was quick to point out that the club is very grateful to receive the Bermuda Government’s grant of $75,000, which was used to immediately repair and replace the damage flood lights. The obvious benefit being that night football games and other activities were able to resume after the lights were out of commission for several months.

Senator Bean stated, that (SCC) like many of our clubs around the Island requires some upgrading. He added that SCC has done a fantastic job relative to other clubs. He went on to say that Government is committed to give a much greater boast to all clubs. He further added that the improved environment will have a lot to do with attracting young people to the club while at the same time encourage older, more mature people to come to the club.

BFA General Secretary, David Sabir, who was also present, stated that Somerset Cricket Club has been the bedrock of the Sandy’s Community. Many years ago the Founding Members built the club for the benefit of the community. Today, with Government’s funding and (SCC) vision and by upgrading and developing the club the community will continue to stay involved.
