Bermdua Football Association hand out (6) Legend Scholarships for 2008
For the second year running, the Bermuda Football Association awarded (6) scholarships to athletes who are advancing their academic careers in University or College, at the Official Premier’s Residence, Camden House. 
 
 
ANDRA BASSETT
 
Andre Bassett is the recipient of the Keith Dunstan Scholarship valued at $5000 per year.
 
A 2006 graduate of The Bermuda College with an Associate’s Degree in E-Commerce Andra will be furthering his education at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is a member of the Prospect United FC and has dedicated several years to coaching and refereeing in our youth football programs. Andra also believes that “Dreams are renewable” and by receiving this scholarship it will help him fulfill his dream.
 
In her glowing letter of support for Andra’s application for a BFA Legends Scholarship, Mrs. Evelyn James-Barnett, Director of Communications at the Bermuda College wrote: Andra is “Highly respected and extremely personable, he has brought his life experiences as a young black male to bear positively on his environment, with willingness to encourage and mentor young students with whom he interacts on campus, on the sports field, and in the community. He is passionate about the value of education and seizes every opportunity to better himself so that he can better influence others.”
                                                           
   
ASHLEY WALL
 
Ashley Wall is the recipient of the Gladwin Daniels Scholarship valued at $5,000 per year.
 
Ashley is a graduate of the Care Learning Centre. She is currently studying at Keiser University in Daytona Beach Florida pursuing a career in Radiologic Technology where she obtained a GPA of 3.6 in her first year. She has volunteered as a Candy Stripper at the King Edward Memorial Hospital and took part in the Random Acts of Kindness at the Warwick Academy School.
 
Currently a member of the North Village Community Club, she is a member of the Women’s national football team. Ashley has been awarded the BFA Young Player of the Year.
 
In her letter of application for a BFA Legends Scholarship, Ashley wrote: “My passion and love for the game has made me who I am today and has kept me on the correct path in life. I have been told that I am a great role model to the young players on the team as well as my peers. I am a promising student who would like the chance to make a difference in my community.
 
   
ANWAR TELFORD
 
Anwar Telford is the recipient of the Granville Sam “The Cat” Nusum Scholarship valued at $5,000 per year.
 
A June 2008 graduate of the Berkeley Institute, Anwar will be commencing his studies in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the New York Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Somerset Bridge Recreation Club Academy and was a member of the U-23 National Football Team that competed in the Olympic Qualifiers in Cuba. 
 
In his letter of application for a BFA Legends Scholarship, Anwar wrote: “It was not until the latter part of my third year of high school that I realized the connection between my education and football.  I realized two things – (1) my goal to become an electrical engineer would not be reached if my academics don’t improve, and (2) my skills in football could contribute to me getting a scholarship to college. Yes, my parents said it but the reality of it hit home after visiting colleges and speaking to admission officers and college coaches.

WHITNAE DUERR
 
Whitnae Duerr is the recipient of the Alicia Zuill Scholarship, which is available to female student / football players only and valued at $10,000 per year.
 
Whitnae is a 2008 graduate of The CedarBridge Academy. She has been on the Honor Roll all four years in high school and has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.00. Whitnae will commence her studies in September at St. Mary’s University in Canada and aspires to be a sports medical physician.
 
She played for the Somerset Hurricanes from 2005 – 2007 and currently a member of the PHC Women. She is a member of the Women’s national team and represented Bermuda during the Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Antigua in 2007. 
 
In her letter of support for Whitnae’s application for a BFA Legends Scholarship, Wonda Burgess wrote: “Whitnae has always been a dedicated and hard working child who strives for excellence in everything she does. During her Primary, Middle and Senior school attendance she would study hard to achieve academic excellence in her classes, while also excelling in almost every sport she participated in. Whitnae as a dedicated individual has proven that she will confront and rise above all aspects of life’s challenges.

TINA WALL
 
Tina Wall is the recipient of the Randolph Horton Scholarship valued at $10,000 per year.
 
Tina is a 2000 graduate of The Warwick Academy and in 2006 she earned an Associate’s Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology at Keiser University in Daytona Beach, Florida. At that time she graduated with a GPA of 3.45. Tina will be returning to Keiser University this upcoming semester to pursue a degree in Nuclear Medicine. 
 
Tina is currently a member of the St. Georges Lady Colts team. She also played on the Women’s national team during their Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Antigua in 2007.
 
In her letter of application for a BFA Legends Scholarship, Tina, wrote: “I would be a successful candidate for this scholarship because I am determined, well focused, and provide nothing but high standards of professionalism in everything I do. Especially, when it comes to patient care, just knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life by helping to determine his or her diagnosis is a great feeling. I see myself as a positive role model for other because I have a positive attitude and have a passion for my field of work. Helping others is an overall achievement of success especially when it is done with a smile on your face. ”
  
 
MARQUEL WALDRON
 
Marquel Waldron is the recipient of the Ernest Drew Scholarship valued at $15,000 per year. 
 
Marquel graduated from Saltus Grammar School in 2007. While at Saltus he earned a placed on the Headmaster’s Honor role in recognition of both his exceptional grades and efforts. He successful passed seven GCSEs with one at grade A; three at grade B, and three at grade C. He served on the student council and participated in the Young Enterprise scheme. Marquel will be attending the University of West Florida this fall to pursue a degree in Accounting.
 
Through all his study’s Marquel still found the time to play the sport he loves. He is currently is a member of League, FA Cup and Martonmere Cup Champions PHC and is also member of our U20, U23 and Senior Men’s National Team. While at Saltus, he was the captain of the first team and had the privilege to assist the PE department as a coach for the younger teams. Marquel is unable to join us today because he currently in the Cayman Islands performing his captaincy duties with our U-20 National Team, who are competing in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
 
As you can see, Marquel is an excellent example of a student athlete.
 
In his letter of application for a BFA Legends Scholarship, Marquel wrote: “Football is very important to my education, and it has had a huge impact on my development as a student, and as a person in general. Football has instilled in me some key characteristics to be successful later in life. Characteristics, such as courage, determination, commitment and punctuality, which are going to be essential for me through the rest of my education and as I enter the working world. Football has also taught me valuable lessons that I can use again on the football field and in my life off the field. For instance, it has showed me how to deal with disappointment and on the other side it has shown me the sort of dedication and sacrificing it takes to be successful. For these reasons I feel that football has a huge importance to my education and my development as a student.”
